Until 1991, state enterprises provided considerable health care for their employees. This is now disappearing as companies are privatized and seek to cut costs. Local authorities have few resources to take over these responsibilities. Bribing medical staff to obtain treatment is commonplace and there is a lack of pharmaceutical products and drugs. Hospital patients are normally fed by their relatives.
